2011 Experiential Education Program

Historic Havana & Sustainable Communities:

An exploration of how arts, architecture, music, culture, heritage, environment and education can create socially and economically sustainable communities

 Who should attend: researchers, academics, teachers, students, independent professionals employed in the fields of art, architecture, agriculture, environment, history, culture, music, etc.

What:          an exciting, interactive experiential educational research program exploring the sustainable community restoration and development projects in old Havana, Pinar del Rio and Matanzas Provinces

Program Schedule

December 11, Sunday Day One

Arrival: Arrive Jose Marti Airport, transfer by private taxi to Melia Habana hotel, Welcome briefing, cocktail and hors d’houevres.
 

December 12-Monday Day Two

Breakfast:   Hotel Buffett
Collective transfer to Old Havana
Session opening by Canadian Ambassador to Cuba, Ambassador Matthew Levin
Historian’s Office presentation on the Old Havana community restoration projects. Guided-interactive walking presentation of UNESCO site, Old Havana .  Visit and research architectural restoration projects, art exhibits, Churches,  Santa Clara Convent, Plaza Vieja Square,   Plaza de la Catedral, 
Lunch: El Castropol on the Malecon 
Continued guided presentation of museums, Great Theater of Havana, National Museum of Fine Arts and the Capital building and the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural (the National Museum of Natural History) and the Cuban Academy of Sciences headquarters. Explore Maqueta de La Habana (scale model of the city).
Dinner:
    Din Don paladar, walking distance from Melia Habana
 

December 13-Tuesday Day Three

Breakfast :  Hotel Buffett
Collective transfer to Old Havana
Morning presentation and interactive day of learning about Cuban cultural community projects focusing on the  Arts and Music.  Explore Old/Central Havana Art Galleries, Presentation by Director of
Giganteria Project -Street Theatre Project, and  Callejon de Hamel -AfroCuban project              
Lunch:  Fuster’s House for lunch & learn about community art project
Afternoon:
 Visit & meetings with students/staff at the ISA (arts & music school) and three artists studios in Havana.  
Lecture on history of Cuban music and culture and rooftop concert at jazz musician Pablo Menendez’s house
Dinner
: La Fontana, walking distance from Melia Habana
 

December 14-Wednesday Day Four

Breakfast:   Hotel Buffett
Depart for the
Pinar del Rio province and the areas of Las Terrazas and Soroa for interactive presentation on sustainable community development through effective use of the agriculture, environment and ecological uniqueness of a region.
Lunch and learn at Las Terrazas complex - lecture on organic agriculture, farming, gardening
Afternoon: visit Organic agriculture projects, reforestation, and examples of sustainable community development projects. Learn how the San Juan River, waterfalls, orchid gardens and coffee and cigar factory contribute to sustainable community development of the
Soroa natural biosphere reserve and surrounding areas.
16:00 return to Havana
Dinner
On your own 

December 15-Thursday Day Five

Breakfast:  Hotel Buffett
Entire day program designed to research and experience historically significant sites around Havana, and the Matanzas province- Guama, Peninsulia de Zapata Bioreserve and Giron.
Depart Havana for Matanzas province with guided presentation to learn about Cuban historical sites
Include: Monuments along Malecon, US Interests Section, Guama aboriginal and ecocentre museum, Playa Giron museum, Caleta Buena
Lunch: All Inclusive afternoon (lunch, museums, snorkeling) at Caleta Buena
16:00 Return to Havana

:  On your own

December 16-Friday Day Six

Breakfast : Hotel Buffett
Late morning: Hotel- Poolside/garden meeting room, discussions, debrief overview of research findings on sustainable communities
Lunch
  On your own
Free afternoon, suggest touring gardens, historic tunnels near Hotel Nacional, walk along Malecon
Dinner
Closing Dinner at  HOTEL NACIONAL Café Laurent / El Parisien Cabaret  

December 17-Saturday Day Seven

The travel agency responsible for coordinating land arrangements in Cuba is WoWCuba, a federally incorporated Canadian company. WoWCuba is also registered under the auspices of Havanatur S.A. in the Cuban Chamber of Commerce and the Cuban entity responsible for delivering land services in Cuba is Havanatur Celimar.  We reserve the right to cancel the program and refund all monies in the case of inadequate numbers of participants or other reasons beyond our control.

-cancellation insurance is recommended at the time of booking. Most insurance companies require
their clients to purchase this service in a period of no more than 72 hours from the time they put down a deposit on their travel.
